Synopsis

In the archive of a regional telephone exchange, an engineer catalogues a wire recording dated 1936. Most of it is what you'd expect: a dance band, a weather report, a woman laughing at a joke the microphone couldn't hear.

Then, ninety minutes in, there is a click. A number is dialled — a number that wasn't assigned until 1974. The voice that answers is asking for someone who won't be born for another sixty years.

The engineer listens to the call four times. On the fourth, the voice asks for him — by name, by room number, by the exact hour he started the catalogue.

"The line was never disconnected. It was only ever waiting."

The Ninety-Year Hum is the first transmission in the WitWisdom Radio Theatre series. Written and produced in Markaryd, Sweden; voiced in English for anyone awake at the wrong end of the dial.
